Indian team: The final of the World Test Championship will be played between South Africa and Australia at Lord’s from June 11.
On 8 June 2025, just four days before the World Test Championship (WTC) Final, Australia were denied permission to train at Lord’s Cricket Ground. The Pat Cummins-led Australian team was informed that training facilities were not available at Lord’s, forcing them to travel three hours in search of an alternate training venue.
The decision came as a surprise as the Australian media reported that the Indian team was allowed to train at Lord’s on the same day. Australia are scheduled to play against South Africa in the WTC Final starting on June 11, while India’s first Test will begin on June 20.
India’s first training at Lord’s
The Indian team, captained by Shubman Gill and coached by Gautam Gambhir, held their first training session at Lord’s on Saturday. It was incomprehensible that India, whose first Test in England is on June 20, was allowed to train at Lord’s while Australia, who are set for the WTC Final, were denied it. India are preparing for a high-profile five-Test series in England for their new WTC cycle. For this, the Indian team reached England early and will play an intra-squad red-ball match at Beckenham from June 13 to 16. Senior players like KL Rahul were sent earlier to take part in four-day matches against England Lions to prepare for red-ball cricket.
Australia got permission later
The Australian team was allowed to train at Lord’s on Sunday, after which they continued their preparations at the historic ground. Australia won the WTC title by defeating India in 2023 and now they have reached the final for the second consecutive time. On the other hand, South Africa, led by Temba Bavuma, is playing in the WTC final for the first time. Australia is considered a strong contender to defend this title, but South Africa’s strong team will pose a challenge.
India could not reach the WTC final
This controversy over the training facilities at Lord’s has become a topic of discussion in the cricket world. Australian captain Pat Cummins expressed disappointment over this, as practice on the field before the final was an important part of his strategy. India could not make it to the WTC final this season, as their hopes were dashed after losing the Border-Gavaskar series 1-3 in Australia. Still, questions are being raised about India getting priority at Lord’s. The match will run from 11th to 15th June, and cricket lovers are eagerly waiting for this historic battle.
