The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, started on June 2, this was the ninth time this exciting tournament has taken place. The T20 World Cup began in 2007, and it has seen many great teams and players. So far, only three teams have won the T20 World Cup more than once: India, West Indies, and England, both winning it twice.

The first T20 World Cup was in South Africa in 2007. India won the tournament by beating Pakistan in the final match held at Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg. Let’s take a look at the list of winners from the past tournaments.

T20 World Cup

The first T20 World Cup was in South Africa in 2007. India, led by the young and talented captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, became the champions by defeating their rivals, Pakistan, by just five runs. Gautam Gambhir scored 75 runs in the final, and he was the top run-scorer for India in the tournament with 227 runs.

2009: Pakistan

T20 World Cup

In 2009, the T20 World Cup took place in England. Pakistan, under the captaincy of Younis Khan, won the title by beating Sri Lanka in the final. Shahid Afridi had a great all-round performance, scoring 176 runs and taking 11 wickets, while Umar Gul was the highest wicket-taker of the tournament with 13 wickets.

2010: England

T20 World Cup

England hosted the third T20 World Cup in 2010 and emerged victorious on home soil. Led by Paul Collingwood, England defeated Australia in the final, winning the trophy for the first time. Kevin Pietersen played a crucial role, scoring 148 runs at a Strike rate of 151.61.

2012: West Indies

The T20 World Cup 2012 took place in Sri Lanka, where the West Indies showcased their power-hitting and flair. Under captain Darren Sammy, they defeated the hosts, Sri Lanka, to claim their first T20 World Cup title. Marlon Samuels scored a brilliant 78 runs in the final, while Sunil Narine was the leading wicket-taker for the team with 9 wickets.

2014: Sri Lanka

In the 2014 T20 World Cup held in Bangladesh, Sri Lanka sought revenge for their previous loss. Captained by Lasith Malinga, they chased down 131 runs against India to win their first T20 World Cup. Mahela Jayawardene was the top run-scorer for Sri Lanka, scoring 158 runs, and Nuwan Kulasekara was the leading wicket-taker with 8 wickets.

2016: West Indies

The 2016 T20 World Cup took place in India, where the West Indies became the first team to win the tournament twice. Led by Darren Sammy, they staged a thrilling comeback against England in the final. Carlos Brathwaite’s memorable innings of four consecutive sixes in the last over was a highlight of the match. Marlon Samuels was the top run-scorer for the West Indies with 181 runs, and Samuel Badree took 9 wickets.

2021: Australia

T20 World Cup

In 2021, the T20 World Cup was hosted by the United Arab Emirates and Oman. Under captain Aaron Finch, Australia defeated New Zealand in the final. Mitchell Marsh was named Player of the Match for scoring a crucial half-century. David Warner was the top run-scorer for Australia with 289 runs in the tournament.

2022: England

The 2022 T20 World Cup took place in Australia. England, under Jos Buttler’s captaincy, claimed their second title by defeating Pakistan in the final. Sam Curran’s excellent bowling earned him the Player of the Match award.
