A Super Over is one of the most exciting aspects of limited-overs cricket. It is used to decide the winner when a match ends in a tie. Essentially, it is a one-over shootout between the two teams, and its unpredictable nature has made it a crowd favourite since its introduction.
The Origins of the Super Over
Before 2008, tied T20 matches were decided by a bowl-out, where bowlers from both teams aimed to hit the stumps. A memorable instance was the India-Pakistan game in the 2007 ICC T20 World Cup, which India won in a thrilling bowl-out. However, bowl-outs were replaced by the Super Over, making its debut in T20 cricket in 2008.
The Super Over in Cricket was introduced during the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup in one-day internationals (ODIs) but wasn’t utilized then. It came into the spotlight during the dramatic final of the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup between England and New Zealand. When the Super Over ended in a tie, England was controversially declared winners based on the now-scrapped boundary count-back rule.
In women’s cricket, Super Overs were first used in the 2017 World Cup and the Champions Trophy.

Super Over Rules
The Super Over has become a regular feature in domestic leagues like the Indian Premier League (IPL), Big Bash League (BBL), and Pakistan Super League (PSL), used even in league-stage games. Here’s how the rules work:
- Scoring: The team with the most runs in the six-ball Super Over wins. If the scores are tied again, subsequent Super Overs are played until a winner emerges.
- Stats: Runs scored or wickets taken in a Super Over do not count toward individual career statistics.
- Ball Selection: The fielding team’s captain selects the ball to be used. For the second innings of the Super Over, the batting team can choose to continue with the same ball or select a new one.
- Order of Play: The team batting second in the original match bats first in the Super Over. The fielding team chooses the bowling end.
- Interval: A five-minute gap is allowed between the original match and the Super Over.
- Batting and Bowling: Each team nominates three batters for the Super Over. If two wickets fall, the innings is over. Bowlers cannot bowl consecutive overs in subsequent Super Overs, and dismissed batters cannot return.
If a Super Over cannot be played due to weather or other reasons, the match is declared a draw.
