Women’s Cricket Makes History: World Cup Prize Money Surpasses Men’s ODI Event

World Cup

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has taken a landmark decision in women’s cricket. The organization has announced a record amount of prize money for the upcoming Women’s One-Day World Cup.

The eight-team tournament will be held in India and partly in Sri Lanka from September 30 to November 2 this year. The total prize money for this edition is estimated at $13.88 million (about 153 crore taka in Bangladeshi currency), which is almost four times more than the last Women’s ODI World Cup in 2022.

Surprisingly, the prize money for this Women’s World Cup is more than the 2023 Men’s ODI World Cup. The prize money for the previous men’s tournament was $10 million.

World Cup

This is a historic moment for women’s cricket. With this massive increase in prize money, we want to show that women cricketers deserve equal status with men,” ICC Chairman Jay Shah said in a statement.

It is worth noting that Australia, the champion of the 2022 Women’s World Cup, received only $1.32 million. This time, the prize money for the champions has increased to $4.48 million. On the other hand, Australia received $4 million for winning the men’s World Cup in India in 2023, which is now surpassed by women’s cricket.

The participating countries have already started preparations for the World Cup. The ICC will soon announce the schedule and venue of the tournament.
