NEW YORK – Teofimo Lopez is still very young, especially in a sport like boxing where careers can be short. But it feels like he’s been around for a long time.
Lopez began his career in 2016 as a highly talked-about young talent. Very quickly, he proved himself and became not just a top contender, but also a world champion and one of the best pound-for-pound fighters.
That was the first part of his career. The second part has been more uncertain. Some nights, he looked great—but not always.
Teofimo Lopez has looked amazing at times—just watch his big win against Josh Taylor. But he hasn’t always been at his best, like when he narrowly beat Jamaine Ortiz or lost to George Kambosos.

Now, Lopez says those past versions are behind him. He’s ready to show something new.
“I’m ready to show you the third version of Teofimo that no one has seen yet,” Lopez said at Wednesday’s press conference for the Fatal Fury event in Times Square.
On Friday night, a part of New York City will close down for this big event, with Lopez, his opponent Arnold Barboza, and other big-name fighters showing up.
Lopez respects Barboza. He knows Barboza is a strong and skilled fighter, especially after beating Jose Ramirez and Jack Catterall one after another. That’s the kind of winning streak Lopez wants to break—to prove himself.
Instead of talking about how he plans to win, Lopez kept things mysterious. But he promised fans an exciting fight.
“You don’t want to miss it,” he said. “I’m the kind of fighter who does it all. I can’t wait to show that on Friday night.”
