Usually, there’s a compromise in boxing — the tougher the competition, the less often a fighter steps into the ring.
Fans don’t like it, experts get annoyed, and even the boxers themselves find it frustrating. But that’s often how things go. Still, Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez has managed to take on top opponents more regularly than most.
Now, we’re almost halfway through 2025, and Rodriguez hasn’t fought yet this year. That’s unusual for him. The delay happened because talks about his next fight didn’t go as smoothly as usual. However, despite the problems, Rodriguez and his team worked everything out.

The 25-year-old is now set to face Phumelela Cafu on July 19 in a WBC and WBO super flyweight title unification match. Rodriguez couldn’t be happier — he’s ready, excited, and looking forward to the big fight.
“I’m feeling really good,” Rodriguez told The Ring. “I’m excited to be back in action.”
Cafu, who is 26 years old, has been doing well recently, winning four of his last seven fights by knockout. Even though he’s been knocking opponents out, he’s not as well-known as Rodriguez (21 wins, no losses, 14 knockouts).
Rodriguez may still be young, but he already has a lot of experience in the ring. In just his 15th and 16th professional fights, he defeated big names like Carlos Cuadras and Sor Rungvisai. He even beat Juan Francisco Estrada—who many consider to be a top fighter—with a stoppage in the eighth round in June 2024.
After fighting three opponents who might make it to the Hall of Fame, Rodriguez could have easily lost focus. But for anyone thinking he won’t perform well or might not be motivated, Rodriguez says they’re wrong.
“I know how important this fight is, and my opponent is also a world champion,” Rodriguez said. “Fights like this really excite me and push me to give my best.”
