Ben Chilwell Leaves Chelsea, Joins Strasbourg on Two-Year Deal in Ligue 1 Move

Ben Chilwell

England defender Ben Chilwell has signed a two-year contract with French club Strasbourg after leaving Chelsea, the club confirmed on Monday. Strasbourg, owned by the same BlueCo group that controls Chelsea, did not reveal the transfer fee.

Chilwell, 28, joined Chelsea in 2020 and was part of their Champions League–winning squad in 2021. But his role in the team slowly reduced, and last season he played only once before being loaned to Crystal Palace, where he helped in their FA Cup victory.

The ex-Leicester City star might now face Palace again, as Strasbourg and Palace are set to meet in this season’s UEFA Conference League.

Ben Chilwell has played 21 matches for England but hasn’t been selected since March last year. At Strasbourg, he will work with English coach Liam Rosenior and join a squad that already has several players linked with Chelsea. The French club signed young midfielder Mathis Amougou and full-back Ishe Samuels-Smith from Chelsea earlier this summer.

Goalkeeper Mike Penders and Ecuadorian youngster Kendry Paez also arrived on loan, while defender Mamadou Sarr was sold to Chelsea and immediately loaned back to Strasbourg.
