British and Irish Lions legends Gavin Hastings, Ieuan Evans, and Tommy Bowe were on the sidelines as rugby’s mental health charity, LooseHeadz, made history by playing the longest rugby match ever.
Both the men’s and women’s matches started at 8 a.m. on Wednesday at Mullingar Rugby Club in Ireland. The women’s game lasted an incredible 26 hours and 33 minutes, breaking the previous world record of 24 hours, 5 minutes, and 15 seconds.
Players from England’s women’s team, including Tamara Taylor, joined in to support the cause. The event was organized in partnership with the Wooden Spoon charity, which also helps disadvantaged children and young people.
The men’s team had their sights set on a longer record — aiming to beat the old mark of 30 hours, 29 minutes, and 41 seconds. They didn’t just beat it; they crushed it. Their match ended a little after 8 p.m. on Thursday, lasting just over 36 hours in total.
The record-breaking games were not only a huge achievement in sports but also raised awareness and support for mental health in rugby.
Both matches raised more than £100,000 in donations and are expected to become official Guinness World Records once confirmed.
“Big congratulations to LooseHeadz and Wooden Spoon for this amazing achievement,” said Hastings.
“I really admire and respect all the men and women who took part in this record-breaking event in Mullingar over the last two days.”
LooseHeadz, known as rugby’s mental health charity, is working hard to break the stigma around mental health. The money raised from this challenge will help make sure that every rugby club has someone responsible for supporting mental health.
“It’s a wonderful moment to celebrate, and tonight we can come together as a rugby community to start the ‘Hugby’ campaign at Aviva Stadium.”
The Hugby campaign will begin during the Lions’ Test match against Argentina in Dublin on Friday night. Both players and fans will be asked to hug each other right after Argentina’s national anthem. This is to help reduce the stigma around mental health in rugby.
The players who played in the record-breaking games in Mullingar will also walk onto the pitch at halftime at Aviva Stadium.
