Sam Eggington Ready for Next Challenge After Cutler Win

Just hours after another tough win, Sam Eggington looked like he’d been through a war. His face was badly swollen, and his eyes were barely open—proof of how hard boxing can be. Still, seeing his young son Layton smiling with his new WBC International Silver belt helped ease the pain.

Some fans were unhappy, saying Lee Cutler (15-2, 7 KOs) used his head too much and committed fouls. But Eggington (36-9, 20 KOs) couldn’t change what happened. The fight ended early after a head clash caused a cut above his eye. The doctor said he couldn’t continue, so the referee stopped the fight, even though Eggington was ahead on all three scorecards.

Cutler’s team is expected to ask for a rematch later this year, but Eggington felt confident about his win. “I’m usually not sure if I’ve won or lost, but this time I felt I clearly won,” he said. “I maybe lost two rounds when I was messing around, but other than that, I was ahead.”

Eggington, who just won a British junior-middleweight title eliminator, says he’s open to any opportunity. “I’ve always taken whatever fights come my way. No need to change that now. We’ll look at the options as a team,” he said.

He knows he’ll need some time off to heal from another tough battle. While Cutler was strong, Eggington believes his experience helped him control the fight. “People don’t give me credit for my boxing skills. Cutler thought he’d just jab me all night, but I surprised him.”

Eggington doesn’t watch much boxing himself, but he’s aware that British champ Sam Gilley and Louis Greene still need to reschedule their fight. “I don’t plan my path. I just fight when the chances come,” he said.

He also shared advice for young fighters: “Not everyone can be Floyd Mayweather. You win some, you lose some. What matters is how you come back. I’ve done that many times, and I’m still here.”
